Inside The Ops

Hopefully he says nice things

This is yet another great opportunity to talk about a key member of the Falcker team. You might have seen our drones and amazing clients we work with, but here’s some insight into what it’s like to work for Falcker from our Head of Operations, Lars Nieuwenburg. (We didn’t ask him to say anything nice and from here on in, it’s in his words, not ours).

“At Falcker I get the opportunity and the freedom to develop myself however I like, and I think this is a truly positive company value that makes Falcker a brilliant employer.”

A Little Bit About Me

I’ve been working at Falcker for the past two years, but before we get into the here and now, let me cover some of my education and work history, so you can really understand why working at Falcker is so special to me.

I come from a family who works in the infrastructure sector, and my goal for study after high school was centered around working big rig excavators. I watched my father do it for many years, and it’s something I was always interested in. I just love working hard.

But, during my study I found out how digitization was changing the industry and making work quicker and easier. After an initial three years of studying, I wanted to round out my learning with a final year of learning about land surveying.

If you haven’t already spotted the trend, I love to learn about a wide variety of topics, and this is one of the reasons I love being at Falcker, but we’ll get to that soon.

As my formal education was coming to a close, I started to look to the job market, as I was keen to put some of what I had learned into practice as well as start making some money in my early twenties. I was able to secure a job with Dura Vermeer four days a week, which enabled me to sign up for a part-time degree course – I know, I’m a sucker for punishment!

After two years at Dura Vermeer, I transitioned to their digitization team and began to help build information modeling systems. These types of models were used to help predict potential project failures before a project was underway to keep the cost of delays down. During this time, I became aware of Falcker as Dura Vermeer was engaging them in a project. As my study again came to a close, I started looking further afield for more opportunities, and it was perfect timing as Falcker were hiring.

“We are a great team and I feel very lucky to be a part of that. Even If I call them in the middle of the night, the whole Falcker team would be there for me if I needed them, and I’d do the same for them..”

A Serious Change of Pace

I might be the Head of Operations now, but when I first started at Falcker I joined to help them with data processing – that was of course my background. I came in and began helping them create backup systems for all the data they were collecting. Then, when an opportunity came up to run their operations, I went for it. It felt like a big jump for me as a recent graduate, but they were completely confident. I think that’s because they knew where I would need support and were more than happy to give it. It turns out that my varied background, experience in a large organization, and keen work ethic fit perfectly into an ops setting.

It’s a really tight-knit group of people at Falcker, we all want to do the best job possible, and we all want each other to succeed. It’s an environment that feels almost like a family, and yet it’s completely professional. With a real mix of skills, experience, age, background, and everything, we can always find a solution to client needs.

BP was the first project I was involved in from scratch. At the time they were a new customer, and I had a lot of contact with them, helping to build the relationship alongside our CEO Thomas who really showed me how to work best as a team and for the customer. At the start, we were looking after 37 tanks, but now it’s 127. This for me showed that they believe in us. That’s a great feeling in a team.

Now, my day can be over 100 phone calls, speaking to drone pilots, sales teams, contractors, clients, and developers – it really never stops. But that’s perfect for me because no two days are the same, and I’m always learning. I’m still helping to optimize process flows because it’s that efficiency which is such a huge customer benefit. We always want to do things better and faster, and I’m excited to continue helping that to happen.

Want to work with great people like Lars? Get in touch with Falcker today, we’d love to hear from you.
